Car Hire in Downtown Marrakech — Gueliz, Hivernage, Medina or Airport?

Most visitors don't need a car for their first days in Marrakech. The Medina is walked, not driven, and taxis cover the rest. The car becomes useful the day you head for the Atlas, the Ourika Valley or Essaouira. So the real question isn't only which agency, but where in town to pick up the car — and that choice changes your price, your stress level and your parking bill.

Here's how the main pickup areas compare. Want to see what's available right now? See agencies in Marrakech →

Gueliz: the real "downtown"

When people search for car hire in downtown Marrakech, Gueliz is usually what they mean. It's the modern center built around Avenue Mohammed V — shops, cafés, offices and most of the city's local rental agencies.

Why pick up here:

Good to know: Gueliz traffic is dense at rush hour, with lots of scooters and roundabouts. If it's your first time driving in Morocco, collect the car mid-morning rather than at 6 pm.

Hivernage: hotel district, delivery-friendly

Hivernage sits between Gueliz and the Medina walls and is home to many of the city's larger hotels. There are fewer agency counters here, so the usual approach is delivery to your hotel: the agency brings the car to the entrance, you do the paperwork and inspection on the spot.

Ask about delivery when you book — many local agencies include it for hotels in the center at no extra cost, but always confirm beforehand.

Staying in a riad in the Medina

Cars can't enter most of the Medina's alleys, and you don't want to try. If you're staying in a riad:

  1. Don't take the car on arrival day. Get to your riad by taxi and enjoy the Medina on foot.
  2. Arrange pickup at a gate or car park on the day you leave town — for example near Bab Doukkala or the Koutoubia side, where the agency can reach you easily.
  3. If you keep the car overnight, use a guarded car park near the Medina gates (expect around 20–30 dh/night) rather than leaving it on the street.

This way you pay only for the days you actually drive.

Menara Airport: convenient, but compare

Menara Airport is only about 6 km from downtown, so airport pickup makes sense if you're heading straight out of the city.

What a downtown rental costs

Prices in town are the same as elsewhere in Marrakech — what changes is mainly delivery and parking.
