Documents and Requirements to Rent a Car in Morocco in 2026
Before booking, most travelers ask the same questions: what documents to bring, what the minimum age is, how big the deposit is, and what happens if something goes wrong. This guide answers each one, based on the requirements actually applied by agencies in Morocco — both local and international. Renting in Marrakech, Casablanca or Fez? You can compare verified local agencies there, with no payment before pickup.
Documents you'll need to show
1. Driving license
European license (France, Belgium, Switzerland, EU): accepted as-is, no translation required.
Non-EU license: an International Driving Permit is technically recommended, but in practice most Moroccan agencies accept national licenses from Western countries without any issue.
Minimum time held: generally 1 to 2 years, sometimes 3 years for SUV or 4x4 categories.
2. Identification
A passport is required for foreign visitors — it's the primary document agencies use for identification, more so than the license itself.
A national ID card (CIN) for Moroccan residents.
3. Bank card
Needed for the security deposit (see below), even if you pay for the rental itself in cash at pickup.
A debit card is enough at most local Moroccan agencies — unlike the major international chains, which usually require a credit card.
4. Proof of accommodation (sometimes requested)
A hotel or riad booking, especially if you're not a resident. Rarely mandatory, but may be requested for the customer file.
Minimum age and young driver surcharges
Vehicle category
Typical minimum age
Compact / sedan
21
SUV
23
4x4 / premium vehicles
25
A "young driver" surcharge is commonly applied between ages 21 and 25, typically 30 to 80 dh/day depending on the agency. Ask about it clearly before booking — it isn't always shown in the base price.
The deposit: how it actually works
This is the point travelers misunderstand most often.
Typical amount: between 2,000 and 8,000 dh depending on the vehicle category, held (not charged) on your bank card at pickup.
How it's collected:
Card hold (pre-authorization) — the most common method, and the safest for you: the amount is reserved but not deducted, and released automatically when you return the vehicle if everything checks out (allow 5 to 15 days for release, depending on your bank).
Cash — still used by some small local agencies; avoid this if possible, as it's harder to recover in case of a dispute.
Check — rare, mostly requested for long rentals.
Before signing, always ask:
"Is the deposit held or charged?"
"How many days after return will it be released?"
"What's the exact deductible amount in case of damage?"
A serious agency will answer these questions without hesitation and spell them out clearly in the contract.
Unlimited mileage or a generous allowance (often 200–250 km/day)
VAT
What's often extra
Baby seat / booster seat
GPS (not very useful today with offline maps on your phone)
Additional driver
Delivery/pickup outside standard hours or outside the city
Comprehensive insurance with a reduced or zero deductible
Renting from a local agency vs. a major chain
Local agency
International chain
Price
Usually 30–50% cheaper
Higher catalog rate
Deposit
Often more flexible, moderate amount
Higher amount, credit card required
Schedule flexibility
Good, direct contact with the agency
Fixed counter hours
Paperwork
Passport + license usually enough
Requirements sometimes stricter
Both options are legitimate — what matters is confirming that the agency, local or international, has a verifiable profile with customer reviews and clear written terms.
Our recommendation
Before any booking:
Photograph the vehicle from every angle at pickup, including any existing minor scratches.
Get the deposit and deductible amounts confirmed in writing (text, email, or contract).
Make sure the contract clearly states what the insurance covers — especially for unpaved roads and tracks if you plan to go off the main routes.
Agencies listed on Morocco Car Booking display their deposit and insurance terms directly on their profile, along with verified reviews from other travelers.
